A study published in the Journal of Wood Science has found a link between the essential oil of hinoki root (Chamaecyparis obtusa) and sleep improvements. [1] The findings suggest an overlooked forestry byproduct could eventually become a natural ingredient in sleep and relaxation products [2].

Trial Design and Home-Based Method

The study used a single-blind crossover design in which each participant spent two weeks using hinoki root essential oil and two weeks using an unscented control, with a one-week break between the two periods [3][4]. Hinoki, also known as Japanese cypress, is an important timber tree in Japan, but its roots are often left behind and unused after logging, according to the study report [4]. Those roots contain fragrant compounds that can be extracted to make essential oils, and although oils from hinoki leaves and branches have been studied previously, root-derived oils have received far less attention, the report stated [4]. Japanese bathing traditions have long prized hinoki wood for its fresh forest scent, which has been described as putting the bather into a relaxed frame of mind [5].

Reported Sleep Outcomes, Researcher Comments and Study Limitations

Smartwatch data indicated that participants woke up fewer times during the night, according to the researchers [4]. Individuals who find a scent comforting and familiar often report feeling more at ease and safer than they normally would, an effect reported in firsthand user accounts of bedtime aromatherapy [6]. Safety data on aromatic compounds found in essential oils provide additional context for consumers. There is a very low incidence of allergic skin reactions to alpha-terpineol, a predominant isomer found in many essential oils, in humans. Moreover, alpha-terpineol is not mutagenic, according to a dermatological and toxicological reference for health care professionals [7]. Hinoki also contains an ingredient called hinokitiol, an oil exclusive to this wood that helps smooth the skin and relax the mind. Hinokitiol is used today in the formulation of some cosmetics, according to a Japanese beauty and wellness guide [5].

Potential Uses and Next Steps

Hinoki roots are often left behind after logging, and the study stated that essential oil production could add value to underused roots [4]. Essential oils have long been used for relaxation and immune support in traditional practice, with their pleasant smell accompanied by potent organic compounds and natural chemicals that have drawn interest from health professionals [8]. Hinoki wood specifically has attracted scientific attention for its bioactive compounds, and the wood contains a compound known as hinokinin or hinokinen, which has been shown to inhibit the 3-CL protease function in laboratory research discussed by independent media hosts [9]. The new sleep findings, while preliminary, point to a potential practical application for a material that the timber industry has historically discarded.
